Lessons that can help you change the world
Lessons that will help you change the world by Naval Adm. William H. McRaven, ninth commander of U.S. Special Operations Command, at the University-wide Commencement at The University of Texas at Austin on May 17, 2014.
You can watch the presentation – definitely worth 20 minutes of your time. Share it with your children, family, friends and colleagues and you can only imagine the tremendous impact you can have in making the world a better place.
Here’s his list:
1)Start your day with one task completed – make your bed.
2) Find someone to help you paddle – help you through life.
3) Respect everyone – measure a person by the size of their heart, not by the size of their flippers.
4) Know that life is not fair – get over being a sugar cookie and keep moving forward.
5) You will fail often – it’s part of the circus.
6) Don’t be afraid to take risks – sometimes you have to slide down obstacles head first and you might break a new record.
7) Step up when times are the toughest – don’t back down from the sharks, stand your ground.
8) Face down the bullies – you must be your very best during your darkest hour.
9) Lift up the downtrodden – the power of hope, the power of one person . . . start singing when you are up to your neck in mud.
10) Don’t ever, ever give up – don’t ever ring the bell.
If you will take at least one action daily and make the commitment to help 10 people over your lifetime, not only will it improve your life, you will have had a positive impact on this world.
My mission is to help people make positive change in their lives which then makes the world a better place. I am blessed, honored and humbled by the work I get to do in this world and I never take it for granted.
Just remember, you make a bigger difference in this world and have a greater impact on people than you will ever know. You may never have 10 people come up to you, email, call or write you to tell you that you did, but if you will do those 10 items, it will not matter that you have not been told – you will just know it!
Go out and do great things – start somewhere – make your bed!
Always remember – it’s The Chatter that Matters
